Transition to
Higher Education and Careers
While
the decision about what to do after school is ultimately
the student's, BCS makes every effort to pave the
way to higher education and careers. While centred
on the student, the process involves parents, teachers,
tutors and the Head of the Sixth Form and the Head
of Careers.
The School is as helpful as it can be (and the
student wishes), but the responsibility inevitably
rests on the person whose future is at stake. Most
BCS Sixth Formers go on to university. A few know
immediately what they wish to study and where, but
most are grateful for some prompting and initial
guidance in deciding which subject areas to continue
and at which university. The application
procedure is somewhat daunting and Sixth
Formers are alerted to it as early as February
in Year 12 so they have ample time to consult
and think and to prepare their application (UCAS
or Oxford or Cambridge) for the following autumn.
Assistance is given to students proposing a GAP
year (a year between school and university for
travel, work and new experiences); the Jinja teaching
assignment can be part of a such a year, and universities
are almost always co-operative provided there is
a clear and purposeful plan for the year. Next
