UGANDA LINK
Bristol Cathedral School has been linked with St. James’s
School, Jinja, since 1990. St. James’s is an independent
co-educational secondary school near the centre of Jinja,
a major town on the northern shore of Lake Victoria .
 |
Each year two of our Gap Year students
spend six months teaching at St. James’s. They
also teach at other secondary schools such as Lords
Meade Vocational College . We are now establishing
contacts with Busede College , Bugaya, a secondary
school in a rural area. Our students have also helped
at local nursery and primary schools.
|
Each year a teacher from St. James’s visits
B.C.S. for a month in the autumn. He/she shares his/her
experiences of Uganda with us and gets involved in
our classroom activities, our school trips and a variety
of other events. There are also visits to Jinja by
members of the B.C.S. staff. Martin Adakun, Head of Physics at St. James’s,
will be visiting us in 2004 |
 |
In 2003 B.C.S. introduced a scholarship scheme
to enable children from impoverished families to attend
St. James’s. One of these is Muhammad Rashid,
a homeless orphan. Muhammad lives in a tiny room in
St. James’s and earns money by cutting the grass
at the school. |
|
The 2004 school trip “adopted” a
needy family near Kamuli as part of an “Adopt-a-Granny” scheme.
The “Granny” is in fact a widowed mother
with four children, shown standing in front of their
house. |
 |
There were school trips to Uganda in
2002 and 2004. Students took part in debates and concerts
and football matches with our hosts at St. James’s
School and Lords
Meade. They also enjoyed the sights
of Uganda including the wildlife of Queen Elizabeth
National Park and rafting on the Nile . |
The School has supported other charities in Uganda
. We recently donated a television and video to the Children’s
Hospital. We have also supported the Busoga
Trust who supply clean water to rural areas. |
