Bristol Cathedral
School Jazz Band
Modern Languages teacher Mark Etherington formed the
jazz band at the school in September 2002.
Mr.
Etherington, who plays at “The Old Duke” with
one of Bristol ’s most established jazz bands “The
Severn Jazzmen,” believes that opportunities for young
people to play jazz can be hard to come by, and the band
was started with the aim of offering this opportunity to
pupils in the school. Over the last two years, the band has
played at many events,
both in and outside of school, and it has become a favourite
item at school concerts.
During the last twelve months, the band has enjoyed and
excellent year of music-making. Notable performances included
concerts in the cathedral, the 6th form ball, a wonderful
concert in aid of Amnesty International, and above all, “Some
Like It Hot,” the celebration concert of jazz and swing
in the Fortune Theatre. This year, we even recorded an impromptu
CD, which included some vocals from Anja Hertel, the school’s
German assistant.
The band looks to have an exciting year in prospect; more
school events, and some outside engagements too, are already
in the diary, and with an exciting new line-up, the band
sounds better than ever!
