GCSE grades announced today at Bristol
Cathedral School are better than in any previous year.
41% of the GCSEs taken by the 65 boys in Year 11 were
at A or A* grade, while nearly one in six (16%) were
at A* – double the highest figure previously
recorded by the school. In addition, 98.4% of candidates
achieved the benchmark five A*-C grades.
Headmaster Mr Kevin Riley said pupils and staff were
delighted at this performance: “These are our
best-ever GCSE results by every indicator. At a time
when there is a lot of talk about boys under-performing,
ours don’t!”
The independent day school, which currently has girls
only in the sixth form, recently announced that it
is to become fully co-educational from 11-18 from September
2006.
“These are simply excellent results for a school
with a mixed intake, with, for example, one or two
boys who have identified learning difficulties such
as dyslexia nevertheless achieving very good grades.
Today’s results are a triumph for our extensive
system of academic monitoring and profiling, which
adds value to each child by identifying and working
with individual strengths and weaknesses,” Mr
Riley added.
The results followed on from excellent A Level results
achieved the week earlier.
