Labour MP Valerie Davey will give her backing to lowering the voting age to 16 when she visits teenagers at Bristol Cathedral School on MPs 'Back to School Day' on Friday (April 23).

Concerns have been growing for some years that while 16 and 17-year-olds can get married, pay taxes and serve in the Armed Forces, they are not allowed to take part in local or general elections.

Now the Bristol West MP is speaking out in support of a change in the law as she visits potential young voters at Bristol Cathedral School and youngsters at two other schools in her constituency, Elmlea Infant School in Westbury-on-Trym and Bishop Road Primary School in Bishopston.

She said: "It is always a great pleasure to have the opportunity to meet young people and hear their views. Young people's questions are invariably the most challenging, leading me to believe that they should be able to contribute more by having the vote at 16."

Her lunchtime visit to Bristol Cathedral School is one of a number of discussion events organised for pupils in Years 12 & 13 by the Head of Sixth Form, Mr Simon I’Anson. On this occasion, youngsters from Year 11, most of whom have turned 16 in the past few months, will also be present.

During her visit, Valerie Davey will talk about why she became an MP and what an MP does. The pupils will also be able to ask her questions.

The visit is her third to the independent school in College Square. A few months ago she also met the Headmaster, Mr Kevin Riley, and a number of other members of Bristol Independent School Heads (BISH) to discuss education in the city.

Mr Riley said: “I am delighted that Valerie Davey is coming to the school to speak to our sixth-formers. We believe it is important that young people should gain an understanding of the way our society works and it will, therefore, be very helpful for our pupils to meet our constituency MP.

“With developments in the curriculum in recent years, there is an argument that young people are sufficiently well informed to vote from age of 16. I am sure that our sixth-formers will be particularly interested to hear of her support for such a widening of the electoral franchise.”

Bristol Cathedral School welcomes boys from 11-18 and has a co-educational sixth-form.
