 High Notes
 2005
Headmaster Mr Kevin Riley says the school
is very grateful for the awards and congratulated
this year’s winners on their success: “These
awards make it possible for pupils to develop
interests in ways they might not otherwise be
able to afford. I am sure that Chris and Lottie
will gain huge benefit from the money they have
been given.”
Chris and Lottie both belong to Bristol Cathedral
School’s co-educational sixth form. The
school recently announced that it will also begin
accepting girls as pupils from the age of 11
from September 2006. |

sixth-former Chris Gilligan struck the right note when
he applied to this year’s
Tools of the Trade awards – because he won £1,000
to buy a piano keyboard. Classmate Lottie Sprague was
also successful with her application for the awards,
netting £500
towards a trip to Italy to study the work of the great
Renaissance artists.
The annual £1,500 awards are made from the legacy
of famous Bristol philanthropist John James and are
used to help pupils pursue an interest or potential
career away from school.
Eighteen-year-old Chris, of Henleaze, has already
spent his £1,000 on a Roland SP5 stage piano.
Chris enjoys performing in jazz and blues concerts
and will use the keyboard for his stage performances.
“I am hoping to go to university in Cardiff
this autumn to read psychology, and you can’t
really lug a conventional piano off to university with
you! This is a lovely instrument that will be invaluable
when I perform,” he adds.
Seventeen-year-old Lottie, of Keynsham, will use
her £500 to subsidise a trip to Italy, ahead
of taking up a university place to read History of
Art. During her visit to Florence, Venice and Rome,
she hopes to see treasures including Michelangelo’s
David and works by Titian.
“I am really happy to get this because I am
doing my course work on Titian,” says Lottie. |

Eventually Chris would like to work as a session
musician. In the meantime, he will be playing the
new keyboard at the independent school’s
Some Like It Hot jazz concert on Friday 25 June. |
