Bristol Cathedral School has made its first-ever clean sweep in the Bristol Senior Schools Art Competition, winning first prize for both girls and boys.

Talented Sophie Bristol took the top award for her fascinating mixed media picture based on the theme of “Self Image”, while Tom Montgomery’s self-portrait in chalk pastels won him first prize for the boys. Fellow sixth-former Tim Woodward, 17, also impressed the judges, earning a Highly Commended for his abstract collograph recreating the look and texture of wood.

Fourteen schools from both the state and independent sector took part in the annual competition, which has been running for around 12 years and is sponsored by the Bristol Savages arts group.

Bristol Cathedral School’s new Head, Mrs Anne Davey, said: “I would like to give my wholehearted congratulations to Sophie, Tom and Tim. I know the whole art department are thrilled. They are a very talented trio and thoroughly deserve their success.”

In her prize-winning piece, 18-year-old Sophie, of Redland, used items including newspaper cuttings featuring herself taking part in a fashion show and the programme of a play in which she took part at the National Theatre.

When she finishes school, she hopes to go on to study at the world-famous Courtauld Institute of Art in London. “I think art will always be an important part of my life,” she said.

Lower sixth-former Tom, 17, who also lives in Redland, was very surprised to take the number one award: “I didn’t really know which medium to use – I chose pastels, even though I had only started using them this year.”

Bristol Cathedral School, which has a co-educational sixth form, recently announced it will begin welcoming girls as well as boys from the age of 11 in September this year.

Its Head of Art, Mrs Anita Kipling arrived at Bristol Cathedral School last term with a remit to expand the subject at the independent school as it prepares for the arrival of the younger girls. “We are planning to do more 3D work and more art involving textiles, as well as generally increasing the size of the artworks our students produce,” she said.
