Panto came to Bristol Cathedral School
this week with a new version of the children’s
favourite, Dick Whittington. Featuring youngsters from
Year 7 through to the sixth form, the production was
the first pantomime at the independent school for three
years.
Drama teacher Mr John Dowty says: “We
have taken quite a few liberties with the story. With
the Headmaster and other staff among the cast, there
are plenty of in-jokes. It was designed to work at
a number of levels and to appeal to all ages, including,
of course, young children.”
Last term’s big production, Macbeth,
drew mainly on actors from the sixth form, but the
panto gave a chance for younger talents to shine through
as well. It also featured the music from the school’s
jazz band and chamber choir. Seb Langkamer, aged 13,
took the title role, while Liam Cureton, 13, was Dick’s
cat and Robin Hodge played Idle Jack.
The panto was performed in the school’s
modern Fortune Theatre. Two evening performances were
held on Thursday and Friday and there was also a matinee
for local primary schools.
“I am delighted that we had the
opportunity to give some Bristol primary school children
what was perhaps their first experience of theatre,” says
Mr Dowty.
