Rocking for Amnesty
A former political prisoner and his family will be
the special guests at Bristol Cathedral School’s
rock and jazz concert next week in aid of Amnesty International.
Actor Derek Thompson from BBC TV’s Casualty
is also hoping to be available to perform as a guest
guitarist at the concert, which is raising money for
Amnesty’s work for prisoners in Burundi. The
actor, who plays Charlie in the series, is a member
of Amnesty International and a keen supporter of its
work to help international prisoners.
Teacher Mrs Zuzana Crouch, who has organised the event
jointly with her colleague, Mr Peter Davies, says: “We
aim to have one big event for Amnesty International
at the school every term. This should be a great evening,
with a full and varied programme of jazz and rock music
for all tastes.”
Pacelli Ndikumana, who is now a lawyer in this country,
was a prisoner in Burundi and will be at the concert
on Friday 30 April with his family. A representative
from Amnesty International will give a brief talk during
the evening.
Performers include several members of staff and pupils
at the independent school. Among the line-up is the
Mark Etherington Jazz Band, with vocalists Anja Hertel
and Tottie Bailey. Also appearing will be Chris & Chris,
Roadhouse, Caroline Everett, Lottie Sprague, Jenna
Cooper and Debbie Smith.
Mrs Crouch said the school’s Amnesty group had
recently arranged the writing of 275 letters in support
of Amnesty International’s Youth Action and had
lobbied successfully for a non-uniform day to raise
funds for the prisoners.
Tickets for the 7.30pm concert in the school’s
Fortune Theatre cost £2.50 and are available
from the school office on 0117 929 1872.
