“I talk to them about the importance
of what music they listen to themselves and of how they
analyse it,” says Mr Barnard, who lives in Cotham. ”Then
I encourage them with a few ideas that they can run
with. I want to give them freedom to express themselves,
but make sure they are starting from the right point.”
He has been impressed with the number of talented pupils
at Bristol Cathedral School , which educates choristers
for the Cathedral Choir and has a strong reputation for
its instrumental music as well. |
Mr Barnard has worked with the London Sinfonietta,
Welsh National Opera and New Bristol Sinfonia. His
film credits include a new sequence for The Jesus Film
and music for horror film Requiem and the supernatural
mystery movie, Craven Place .
The school’s Director of Music, Mr John Seymour,
says: “It’s easy to talk about the theory
of composing, but these classes are a valuable opportunity
for pupils to meet someone who has actually done it
professionally.”
This term, Mr Barnard is running a choral composition
competition for his classes, with the best pieces being
performed by the Chamber Choir at lunchtime concerts.
Parents, pupils and staff will be able to hear one
of Mr Barnard’s own compositions on Friday 10
December, when a new choral piece based on a text about
the Virgin Mary will be premiered at the school Carol
Service. The composition, which has been commissioned
by the school and cathedral, will be performed by the
Cathedral Choir.
