The independent school’s Director of Music,
Mr John Seymour, says: “This is entertaining
and profound music which is quite intellectual, but
has real energy and life that carries the listener
along.”
The concert is one of the showpiece events for Bristol
Cathedral School, which is an acknowledged centre of
excellence for music in the city.
Seventeen-year-old sixth-former Jonathan
Rees, of
Clifton, who was recently appointed Co-Principal Cellist
at the National Youth Orchestra, is the soloist for
Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No 1 in E Flat.
The concert on Saturday (MARCH 6) will be the first
time this piece has been played by the school’s
First Orchestra.
The orchestra also includes talented Brislington twins
George and John Alexander, from Year 9, who play the
cello and oboe respectively. George, who has played
the cello in the National Children’s Orchestra,
hit the headlines in the autumn when he notched up
the best score in the country in the BBC’s Test
the Nation quiz and chatted live on air with Anne Robinson.
Mr Seymour will conduct the Shostakovich concerto
and Grieg’s Norwegian Dances 1 & 2, while
Roger Huckle, known locally as the director of the
Emerald Ensemble, will conduct Nielsen’s Suite
for Strings.
“We chose the Nielsen because it’s a 20th century piece that is demanding and challenging in
terms of pitch and intonation,” says Mr Seymour. “It’s
stretching for the musicians and it’s rare for
schools to play it.”
