The English Department works closely
with Drama, Music and Art in a stimulating, productive
atmosphere. Our
aim is to encourage a genuine love of reading and
writing at all stages. In
the first three years we tackle, for example:
- skills in writing
- book reviewing
- composition of poetry and drama scripts
- a wide range of literary stimuli
- personal writing
- talks and discussions
The school has close links with the adjacent Central
Library and there are theatre trips, writing competitions,
public speaking opportunities and the chance to
participate in drama productions. We
expect high standards in presentation, accuracy
and content in pupils’ written work as part
of a process of development that leads to enjoyment,
satisfaction and confidence in self-expression.
GCSE
At GCSE Level we follow SEG/AQA syllabi and boys are
streamed into three groups with the same teacher
for two years. Boys
sit exams in English and English Literature with
excellent results.
A Level
Our Sixth Form courses in English Literature
also use the AQA Syllabus. There
are two groups for AS and two for A2 Levels. Groups
of ten to twelve students invariably include girls
and in many cases the students will also be following
courses in Theatre Studies, Music or Art. Teaching
is spread across the Faculty to provide a range
of viewpoints. Sixth
Formers contribute strongly to our school magazine
and often produce their own literary publications. There
is strong participation in debating and public
speaking events. Students
make frequent visits to theatres and enjoy a wide
range of guest speakers from the Arts world.
The English Faculty is known
For teaching students how to hone
Their writing skills and love of lit,
With patience - and a hint of wit.
We also generate the parts
For Drama, via Expressive Arts.
We publish 'Pupil' (Sixth Form Mag),
And fill the school's official 'flag'
The Cathedralian with verse
While also trying hard to nurse
Those pupils who find writing tough,
Or really don't read books enough.
Experienced staff are our great strength
And they will go to any length
To give their pupils firm direction
In any cultural connection.
There's public speaking and IT,
As well as the school library.
Our role is crucial, wide and deep
But leaves us little time for sleep!
