The Department is well resourced, boasting a large range of audio-visual material, including slides, posters, videos and CD-ROMs. There is also a growing collection of historical artefacts, many from archaeological excavations within the school. We are proud of our 17 th century pikeman’s armour, which was made to measure to fit an average Year 8 pupil, and which was kindly donated by the Parents’ Association. Textbooks are provided for all students at all levels. History is taught from Room 42, although the timetable dictates that some groups will be taught in other rooms in the school.

Curriculum

Year 7

In the first three years we broadly follow the National Curriculum. Year 7 study Medieval Realms, including a trip to Chepstow Castle. The course includes a piece of assessed ‘coursework’.

Year 8

Year 8 study The Making of the UK, including a trip and a piece of assessed coursework.

Year 9

Year 9 cover Expansion Trade and Industry, plus the Second World War, which in turn includes a local history study. The course includes a trip and a piece of assessed coursework.

GCSE

At GCSE we follow the OCR Modern World 1937 syllabus, with coursework on the First World War in Year 10, and Stalin in the Year 11. The course starts with a study of Britain 1906-18 for Paper 2 of the GCSE, then we move on to the Core Content: International Relations, 1918-39, and the Cold War. 25% of the course is based on coursework. The course includes two trips, including the Imperial War Museum in London.

A Level

At AS and A2 we follow the AQA course, specialising in Options C (17 th century Europe) and O (17 th century England). We are planning to change Option C for Option D (the French Revolution and 19 th century Europe) in September 2004.

The History Department prides itself on being well organised, well resourced, and, above all, lively and enthusiastic. All seven years have a History trip, and we are steadily increasing our reliance on IT.
