Helpful tips!

Using the Internet

The criteria by which you judge information on the Internet should be the same as you would apply to any source of information:

  • Is it current, up to date information?
  • Is it accurate?
  • How easy is it to navigate the site?
  • Who wrote the site?

Staff

Librarian: Jennifer James BA (Hons)

Introduction

The library was opened in 1999 and houses a selection of resources including fiction, non-fiction and reference books to support the curriculum and reading for pleasure.  The Librarian guides students to relevant information and instructs them on its use.  The Librarian works closely with staff to help develop literacy and promote a love of reading.

A variety of authors visit the school, or we may go to visit them. The pictures on this page are from one such visit, to Waterstones, just a short distance from the school.

Access

The library provides a quiet and comfortable area for independent study, group work and reading for pleasure.  The library is open to all from 8am until 5pm and closed between 8.45 – 9.15am and 12.25-1.00pm.

Resources

Resources are available to support key stage 3, GCSE and A level. These include the Letts Revision Guides, textbooks and reference works such as Encyclopaedia Britannica and World Book Encyclopaedia.  Information books support research in all subjects and are arranged in Dewey order.  A computerised Library Management System, School Library is used by the Librarian.  The library holds a number of audiotapes and 40 curriculum-related CD ROMs.  The Guardian is available on a daily basis and a variety of magazines such as Car, Rugby World, PC Gamer, Total Film prove ever popular with the students.

Reading for Pleasure

The library holds a variety of fiction titles for younger and older readers from CS Lewis and Philip Pullman to Ian Banks and Jane Austen.  Students from Years 7 and 9 visit the library for reading lessons.

ICT

The library has five networked computers with Internet access and one stand alone PC for CD ROM use.  All students are welcome to use the ICT facilities for homework.  A colour printer and photocopier are also available.

Helpful tips!

Doing your homework

  • Be prepared!
  • Read the question carefully.  Ask if you don’t understand the instructions.
NEVER leave it until the last moment!
  • Look at the keywords and plan your research around that.
  • Think about what resources are available, the Internet is not always the best place to begin your research!
  • Write in your own words.
  • Re read what you have written!
